The first tutorial that Lea went through with us was the stripe design. Simply starting from a square or rectangle canvas, the rectangle tool was used to select vertical strips in succession, then each was filled with the paint bucket. After a number of strips, the motif was selected then copied to fill the canvas. We then defined the pattern, created a new canvas and selected 'fill.'

The second part of the tutorial was all about creating a pattern using downloaded brushes and making a motif to put into repeat. I selected a brush in a bird shape and used transform and duplicate to flip and rotate the bird into a symmetrical motif. After creating my motif I selected an area to use to 'define pattern' which was then later used to 'fill' a blank canvas. This area selected must be a square or rectangle. The pattern differed depending on whether or not I selected a rectangle or a square to define the pattern.
